LETTING THE WIND CARRY IT AWAY.

Sometimes the hardest place to visit is not a distant land, but the quiet room where my everything waits for me, unchanged, unsoftened by time. Facing it requires a courage I often pretend I have mastered, yet when truth arrives, bare, unguarded, it cuts deeper than any blade meant to heal.

Three days ago, truth found me. Not loud, not cruel, just precise. It entered me like surgery without anesthesia, sharp, intentional, unavoidable. I sat in the matatu as the world moved on around me, people getting on and off, lives continuing, while mine paused in mid-air. I stared out the window, not seeing the road, only replaying every word that refused to loosen its grip.

When I reached home, I locked myself away, as if walls could protect me from what had already entered my heart. I held myself together for hours until the weight became too heavy to carry in silence. Then I broke, quietly and carefully, because my children must never see the cracks. To them, I am the superhero, the strong woman who always stands, the one who does not fall.

I cried myself into exhaustion, into a sleep that was not sleep, only a pause between waves of pain. I asked God why. The room remained silent. I asked if this suffering was part of the path, and if answers would ever come. Still, nothing, only the echo of my own breathing, and the slow realization that some questions are not answered with words.

As I replayed the conversation, every explanation laid bare, it struck me like a speeding car; this thing I held onto, it could never be. Not no matter how much I wanted, not no matter how hard I tried or tried again. Hope finally loosened its grip, not because I stopped believing in love, but because I chose to stop hurting myself.

So I smiled and stood. Not because I was okay, but because I had decided to leave with dignity. I walked away without saying everything I felt, without showing the storm inside me, without letting my emotions beg to stay. Goodbyes are sometimes silent, sometimes invisible, but no less real.

In my mind, I am deleting the maybes. Those dangerous little words that keep the heart suspended, neither here nor free. Yes, it hurts, but why should I continue hoping for something that has already told me it cannot be? Hope should be a home, not a wound.

So like the wind, I let it go. I loosen my fingers. I allow it to fly away, to become part of the sky where it no longer weighs me down. They say you only get one in a lifetime; perhaps that is true. Or perhaps what we get is not just one person, but one moment that teaches us how deeply we are capable of loving.

And now, here I am, no longer who I was, not yet who I will become. A caterpillar in its quiet, unseen stage, mistaken for weakness, mistaken for stillness. But inside, a transformation is already underway.

I am learning not to wrestle with fading possibilities, but to loosen my grip and let them drift away. I am learning the quiet courage of choosing myself. And when the season turns, I will rise, not shattered by what I lost, but reshaped by what I once cherished.

A butterfly does not mourn the cocoon forever. It flies!
