A LETTER WRITTEN AT THE EDGE OF A NEW YEAR.

As the year slowly folds into its ending, its lessons rise like quiet echoes. Not loudly. Not all at once. But gently, honestly asking to be acknowledged.

This year began with uncertainty, with a version of the self that felt fragile, unfinished, almost unrecognizable. Strength had to be learned where weakness lived. Bravery had to be practiced in spaces once ruled by fear. Happiness had to be invitedeven while sadness refused to leave. And somewhere between survival and hope, the self that was slipping away was called back patiently, lovingly.

Single parenthood unfolded in ways no imagination could prepare for. Harder than expected.Lonelier than admitted.Demanding everything time, energy, courage, even on days when there was nothing left to give. Still, the journey continued, step by trembling step.

There was the weight of beginning again. A new environment.Unfamiliar faces.Starting from nothing but instinct and faith. Learning how to exist in a place where no roots were waiting, where everything had to be built by hand.

There were moments of drowning, not metaphorical, but real and suffocating. Moments when staying felt heavier than letting go . And yet, life insisted. Through clinic corridors, through prescribed pills, through the quiet courage of admitting that help was needed. Alive, still alive even when joy felt distant.

The heart learned slowly. Healing did not arrive neatly. Pain did not leave politely. But still, the heart tried. It learned to mend without denying the ache, to beat even when bruised, to hope without guarantees.

And now, at the closing of the year, a letter is written not to explain, not to justify, but to remember.

Dearest Gabby,

This year, you learned how to live not the loud, celebratory kind, but the quiet, determined kind. You learned how to heal without rushing the process. You did not compare your journey to anyone else’s highlight reel. You allowed yourself time, time you were never given, time you finally claimed. And nothing, not even fear, stopped you from choosing it.

You did not heal the way you planned. And that is okay. Healing is not finished; it is ongoing. Some days, you walked forward with resolve. Other days, you collapsed under the weight and cried yourself to sleep. Both versions of you were brave. Both deserve compassion.

Every step you took was honest. You faced things that nearly broke youand stayed anyway. You held yourself together when no one noticed the fractures. You searched for light even when you did not know which direction to face.

Never forget this truth: you are a strong woman. You are a strong mother. Not because you never fell, but because you always rose, sometimes quietly, sometimes in pieces, but always forward.

As you stand at the doorway of a new year, may you carry less guilt and more grace. May you continue healing without apology. May you remember that survival itself was an achievement.

With love, pride, and gentleness,

Gabby
